Viewing Client Email With Malware

Yeah, I know, the spam filter can be annoying when it traps stuff we actually want to see.  Sorry, not sorry, it’s necessary to keep out hundreds of thousands of junk emails that we get every week, which I know from my long suffering you will never delete.  I really have no interest in storing junk email on the server or in the archive for the next 30,000 years.  It also prevents some malware from getting through and no one wants that problem, either.  If you pray for rain, be prepared to deal with a little mud, right?

Ok, then, on to the point.  Most of you know how to release ordinary email from the email jail and whitelist your clients or contacts.  But what the heck do you do when email from a client gets flagged with malware?  That can’t be released by a user, Hockman! Correcto.  We don’t want you taking a peek at things that may have harmful code in them and I know you’ll do it “maybe just this one time” if we make it easy. So we haven’t.

You can take a peek, but not by yourself.  Here’s what you do:

1.      Open up a ticket to iPower.

2.      Tell them you have email in the spam filter from a client, contact, whatever, that has been flagged for malware.

3.      Ask them to open it up and see what it is in the message.

4.      iPower has a PC that is not connected to a network for just this purpose.  They can open it and maybe clean it.

5.      If it’s clean, or cleanable, they’ll send it along to you.  If not, they’ll tell you what they found.

Easy to do and it protects all of us from that “maybe just this one time” scenario.
