Remote Access Instructions - including phones!
Weiss Serota Mobile Device Policy
The purpose of this document is to provide basic setup instructions for enabling remote access to the firm’s computer network resources via the following supported mobile devices. At this time, no other devices are currently supported by the WSH IT department. Currently supported devices for email and tablet use are products from RIM/Blackberry, Apple’s iPhone and iPad, and the Droid (Google Android) series of smart phones.
Device Acquisition: It will be the sole responsibility of the firm employee to procure one of the supported mobile devices. The firm will not be financially responsible for the acquisition or support of your mobile device unless you are at the member level. Please note, that a cellular DATA PLAN is required for functionality of the mobile device. You must also procure this on your own and you are responsible for any data costs from your cellular provider. Please confirm that your mobile device DOES have a successful internet connection and can surf the internet prior to adding any WSH connections. It is recommended that you purchase any new device during the work week and plan on activating it during business hours for best support.
New product deployment, training, and initial setup should be scheduled with the weekly onsite technician from each office respectively. The onsite technician shall make time to give you a basic over-view of the mobile device, configure your firm email and remote access settings. For more in depth training on all of the advanced features of your device, we encourage you to get training from the store or supplier where you purchased the device. iPower’s goal is to confirm the device is working properly and can access WSH network resources.
The document below will guide you through enabling firm corporate email and remote access on your device. Please follow the instructions below to configure email and remote desktop access.
FIRM EMAIL – The firm operates a Microsoft Exchange Server and the following are instructions to add a firm email account on the following platforms.
Any web browser – You may access the firm’s web based email site at
https://mailbox.wsh-law.com/owa
Blackberry
The firm uses a Blackberry Enterprise Server to accommodate the wireless synchronization of email, contacts, and calendar items. Activating your Blackberry is a two part process. The first is to open a support ticket with iPower on your computer. iPower must create an activation password on the blackberry server. Note – This password is different than your network logon password. Once the request has been made to iPower, please allow 45 minutes for them to enable your blackberry on the firm’s blackberry server. Once complete, iPower shall email you an activation password. You will need the activation password and your firm email address to activate the blackberry. Then please follow these steps to input the aforementioned information into the handheld and begin the activation process:
The Options menu
If you have BlackBerry Device Software 4.0 and the Enterprise Activation icon is not visible on your Home screen, complete the following steps:
1. On the Home screen, click Options.
2. Click Enterprise Activation.
The Advanced Options menu
If you have BlackBerry Device Software 4.1 or later, and neither the Enterprise Activation icon nor the Setup Wizard icon are visible on your Home screen, complete the following steps:
1. On the Home screen, click Options.
2. Click Advanced Options.
3. Click Enterprise Activation.
You will then be asked to enter your full email address and the activation password. Enter your information and then click on the Blackberry icon key on the phone and choose “ACTIVATE” The phone will begin its sync process which normally takes between 5 and 20 minutes. You will see a progress bar indicating the activation status. Please make sure you keep your phone in a location with solid service and coverage otherwise this could interrupt the process.
iPhone & iPad
The activation process for the iPad and iPhone are exactly the same and quite simple. The only perquisite for activation is that you are connected to the internet via the cellular company’s network(ATT/Verizon). You cannot be connected to the internal wireless network inside the WSH office buildings. If you are at home and on a wireless network outside of the WSH building that will be fine as your connection.
1.) On the home menu, tap the Settings Icon
2.) On the left side, choose “Mail, Contacts, and Calendars”
3.) Under Accounts on the right side, choose “Add Account…”
4.) For the account type, select Microsoft Exchange
5.) Enter your email address: (Example: mpopok@wsh-law.com)
6.) Under domain, enter: WSHADMIN
7.) Under username, enter your network username: (Example: mpopok)
8.) Under Password, enter your network password
9.) Under Description, leave it alone and choose “NEXT”
10.) On the next screen, under SERVER enter: mailbox.wsh-law.com
11.) Choose NEXT
12.) On the next screen you will choose if you would like your device to SYNC the email, calendar, and contacts with your Microsoft Outlook. Please select all of these to “ON” and choose SAVE. NOTE – If you have a current iPhone with contacts on it already, choose to SYNC the contacts will erase your existing contacts and they will be replaced with whatever contacts you have in Outlook. Do not do this if you wish to keep your contacts managed by the phone and not Outlook.
Droid –
1.) Open your app drawer this is represented by an up arrow at the bottom of your home screen, or you may see a small grid.
2.) Once you can see all of your applications locate the “Email” or “Mail” app.
3.) Enter your work email address and the password you use to log into your office computer
4.) Hit next and select exchange. The phone will auto configure they sync.
5.) You will then see a Remote security administration message appear. Select ok
6.) On the next screen leave the frequency to “push” but change the amount of email to sync, you can sync from 1 day of the current emails up to all emails in your inbox.
7.) Lastly you can give your email a nickname, for example you can call it “work” or “wsh” etc.
That’s it you’ll begin receiving email shortly.
*note the basic email app that comes with android is not a very robust email client and is in some cases not reliable for an enterprise use. There are applications available on the Android market that are much better, allow you to customize more options, and are overall faster. The best app from the market is called Touchdown Exchange Sync for Android.
REMOTE DESKTOP – The firm enables remote access to its applications and network data via Remote Desktop. The remote desktop client/server relationship consists of a server which you will login to which grants you a desktop like experience where you can access the firm’s network data and run applications such as Outlook, AIM, etc. To access this service, you will need a Remote Desktop client which is included on any Windows PC and can be downloaded for any MAC or iPad.
